What Do You Need To Feel Good?

You Know You've Got it if it Makes You Feel Good by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

It is with great appreciation I share that my original abstract painting was sold earlier in the year. The one-of-a-kind painting is titled You Know You've Got it if it Makes You Feel Good.

I would like to send a heartfelt thank-you to Ms. Lasquite of Talisay City, Philippines for your incredible enthusiasm and passion for my artwork.

I am so grateful to not only have worked together at Elephant Stock, but to now have you as one of my collectors. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

About this painting

Vibrant colours dance across the canvas, bursting with energy in a symphony of blue and green hues. The large, bold strokes of colour pulsate with life as they lead your eye around the artwork.

The title of this playful and energetic painting was inspired by the lyrics of the song Piece of my Heart, which was a huge hit for Janis Joplin. You can hear her version of the song and follow along with the lyrics in the YouTube video below.

The original painting measures 9” x 12” and is acrylic on paper.

Can You See Freedom Soar in This Painting?

Occupational Freedom by Deb Chaney (11” x 15”)

I’m excited to announce that one of my original abstract paintings is now available for sale along with high-quality prints in various sizes. The painting is titled Occupational Freedom.

How I chose the title of this painting

If you look closely within the collaged text of this painting, you will see a page of words from the dictionary which includes one of the words in the title.

Something I really love doing is to collage old book pages, poems, and dictionary pages and then find a word or sentence to inspire and guide the painting. In the case of this particular contemporary artwork, it also became the title of the painting.

About this abstract painting

This mixed-media abstract painting on paper is made with acrylic paint, pencil, gesso, and collaged book pages.

The colour palette of this contemporary abstract expressionist painting is a vibrant ocean blue with large areas of pure black, grey, and white. Strong gestural strokes create a sense of movement. In the lower-right corner, a soaring bird stenciled in black—with its own distinct space to fly—juxtaposes the strictly regimented pages of a dictionary.

This little painting is part of my Little Gems Series, which I use for testing new techniques and practicing old ones. The original is available for purchase, as are high-quality prints in a variety of sizes and formats, through Saatchi Art online.

The Magical Story Behind Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

I’m excited to announce the completion of a new abstract artwork and that the original painting is now available for purchase. High-quality prints are also now ready and can be added to your art collection through Saatchi Art

The story behind this painting

This painting was inspired by a beautiful and personal memory of mine.

It was a magical afternoon on the ferry heading over to the city. I was with myself on a soul-rejuvenating "artist date"—otherwise known as a mission to get Thai food. (The small selection of restaurants on the island where I live sadly lacks ethnic cuisine.)

It was stormy outside as waves crashed against the ferry. And in the distance, the mountains were covered with snow. It was so beautiful to be on the boat and simply enjoying the ride.

In the background I heard the distinctive introductory chords to Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits. I turned around and immediately connected with the man playing the song. We sang the entire song together while he played his guitar. It was a magical, beautiful moment, and I will treasure it always.

About this painting

The colour palette of this abstract painting is a frothy white with a swatch of dark and light blues, ranging from cobalt to hints of pale turquoise. Impressions of a traditional wooden-spoked ship’s wheel repeat on layers throughout the painting.

Strokes of black create a signature of sorts, followed by 11 short vertical lines counting off in a row across the bottom of the painting.

The original acrylic-on-paper contemporary abstract painting measures 9” x 12”.

How to Get “Belindas Painting” at Bed Bath & Beyond

Belinda’s Painting by Deb Chaney (18” x 26”)

I’m excited to announce that a reproduction of my abstract artwork is now available at Bed Bath & Beyond. (Of course, this is the new online retailer, not the big box chain that shut down!)

About This Painting

When my daughter was little, we'd walk through giant stores like Bed Bath and Beyond, IKEA, and Pottery Barn. I would ask her to imagine with me and picture reproductions of my artwork hanging in the model rooms, available for purchase in these international stores.

Well, my friends, sometimes dreams do come true. I present to you a beautiful little painting I created while working at Braid Street Studios in New Westminster, BC before the pandemic.

During that period, I had a wonderful student coming to me for private lessons to learn abstract mixed-media painting. This painting was inspired by her – and titled Belindas Painting – then purchased by another artist-in-residence.

Now, it is really great to see it available here for others to enjoy as well!

The painting measures 18” x 26” x 1.5” and is a giclee canvas hand-stretched and stapled over North American pine-wood bars. It is inset mounted in an elegant 2”-thick hardwood frame to create a floating illusion.

All You Need to Know About The Alchemists Art Show

Can The Process of Alchemy be Beautiful? by Deb Chaney (36” x 36”)

This post is to announce that my artwork is part of a group exhibit that launches this week and runs right up until just before Christmas. The Alchemists Group Exhibit opens tomorrow (November 8th) and is being held at The Artful Gallery in Courtenay, British Columbia.

About My Painting

The abstract painting I have in the art exhibit is titled Can The Process of Alchemy be Beautiful? It measures 36" x 36" and is mixed media on wood panel.

The heavily textured painting is a mix of blues and gold with sacred geometry repeated across the canvas with stencils of the Flower of Life.

About The Alchemists Group Exhibit

What is alchemy?

Rooted in the Arabian al-kimia (stone preparation) and Greek chemeia (metal pouring), alchemy is considered the origin of modern chemistry. Medieval alchemists sought to turn metals into gold and concoct an elixir for eternal youth, giving them a reputation for magic and the occult.

But modern alchemy is more about transformation and creation in artistic, philosophical, spiritual, or psychological terms. The quest for spiritual enlightenment, harmony, and self-awareness by liberating oneself from beliefs, opinions, traumas, and fears. In this sense, it is a metaphor for a spiritual or psychological rebirth. As you may know, this is a large component of my artwork, so this art show feels very fitting.

Here are all of the essential details about the show:

Exhibit open: Wednesday, November 8, 2023, from 12 pm to 5 pm

Artists’ reception: Friday, November 10, from 7 pm to 9 pm

Exhibit hours: Wednesday to Saturday, 12 pm to 5 pm (regular gallery hours)

Exhibit end date: Saturday, December 23.

The Artful Gallery: 526C Cumberland Rd, Courtenay, BC

The Background Behind My New Painting "The Wild Ride Of Life"

The Wild Ride of Life by Deb Chaney (36” x 48”)

This post is to announce that my new original abstract artwork, The Wild Ride of Life, is available for sale. You can also purchase high-quality prints of the painting in a variety of sizes on Saatchi Art.

About This Painting

This painting was created during those long days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During that time I was painting in a large warehouse complex of art studios. Unsurprisingly, the place was mostly vacated a lot of the time. And it was during that time that I basically went on my own personal rampage of creativity.

The Wild Ride of Life is one of the paintings that I produced during those days in my warehouse studio.

The painting’s colour palette consists of dark reds and blues contrasted with bright white and yellows and earth tones. The composition is an edgy and rough landscape that, although abstract, lends itself to a cityscape. At the same time, drips of paint travel up and down across the canvas, evoking the rollercoaster of the human experience.

The Wild Ride of Life is a mixed media on canvas painting measuring 36” x 48” x 1.5”.

New Original Artwork: Book Cover i

Book Cover i by Deb chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to announce that there are now prints available of my new original abstract artwork. High-quality prints of Book Cover i can now be purchased in a variety of sizes on Saatchi Art.

About This Painting

This part of a pair of Little Gems paintings that were created for a book I am in the process of writing. The book is about reclaiming my authentic creativity and what that really means for me and my artistic practice.

The 2 paintings were ideas I was playing around with for the cover. However, I have since chosen some different artwork – not these two! – for the cover of the book. But these 2 abstract paintings are nevertheless still beautiful and they have a flow and ethereal quality that I love!

Blending purples and blues with luminous areas of white creates a sense of clouds and oceans. A light, airy sense of floating is paired with fluid, wavy movements. While gritty layers of sand give it an earthy texture.

The mixed media painting measures 9” x 12” and is acrylic on paper.

New Original Artwork “Where (Forest and Beach) Become One”

Where (Forest and Beach) Become One by Deb Chaney (36” x 30’)

This post is to celebrate the completion of a new abstract artwork. My original painting Where (Forest and Beach) Become One is now available for sale on Saatchi Art. The original painting is still available to collectors and you can also purchase high-quality prints in a variety of sizes.

About This Painting

Before my (grown-up) daughter went travelling, she was living with me here on our beautiful little island, in the forest close to the ocean. We often shared these moments when what we needed most was – to just get out of the house! And this painting was inspired by one of our many on-island mini adventures.

One night we went to a beach that we adore and to get there we had to walk through the rainforest. It was dark outside and a million stars were shining down between the towering silhouettes of the trees. We stood on the beach, looking up through the treetops, and the place felt as though the ocean and the forest were becoming one.

This piece is designed to invite the viewer's imagination on a journey into nature. The abstract painting evokes a sense of landscape using a mix of earthy tones such as greens, blues, and browns, with hints of warm yellows and oranges.

The composition invites you to explore and contemplate the merging of these 2 distinct environments and encourages a sense of connection with the natural world – and the harmony to be found within.

About This Painting

This painting is a mixed media abstract painting on paper using acrylics, ink, and elements of collage with printed text and paper. With a dynamic and vibrant composition full of motion and energy, the many layers and textures add depth and complexity to the piece.

The colour palette consists of bold hues such as deep blues and dark greens. These contrast with warm yellows, fiery oranges, and bright swaths of white. The colors blend and interact with each other, forming an organic and harmonious composition that invites exploration and contemplation.

Bold brushstrokes reveal a sense of spontaneity and intuition. Swirling lines, drips, and gestural movements add to the painting’s sense of movement and energy.

Paintings Donated to Gabriola Island's Annual Salmon BBQ

Cultivate Your Goodness by Deb Chaney (4” x 6”)

Last summer I donated a painting to the wonderful Gabriola Island Community Hall to be auctioned off at its annual Salmon BBQ fundraiser. I absolutely love our beautiful, vibrant Gabriola community, and I feel so fortunate and am so grateful to live here. As my way of giving back, this year I am donating 3 paintings to the silent auction.

For this year’s auction, I created 3 little canvas pieces that work together but can stand alone specifically for this event. Each abstract painting is 4" x 6" x 1 1/4".

About the Paintings

These precious creations are a heartfelt expression of my love, gratitude, and passion for the enchanting Gabriola Island. It all began when I stumbled upon a newspaper clipping in The Sounder, highlighting a salmon barbecue event and soliciting donations. Filled with excitement, I embarked on a creative journey by incorporating snippets from The Sounder, using them as a foundation for my paintings.

As serendipity would have it, I also discovered a collection of maps, left on a stand in a free bookstore on our street. These maps, adorned with captivating images of the ocean and neighboring islands, felt perfectly fitting.

With deep chromium oxide green paint and dashes of blue, I carefully infused the canvases, allowing them to dry and set the stage for what was to come. Drawing inspiration from my tranquil forest walks on the island, I meticulously crafted silhouette images using organic materials I had gathered along the way. Each stroke and placement was guided by a profound sense of connection to the surrounding nature.

To bring everything together, a final coat of clear gloss adds a protective seal, reinforcing the unity of all the elements.

These creations are not only a gift to our community, but also a testament to the kindness, support, and profound sense of belonging I experience through life on this island. With sincere appreciation, I extend my deepest thanks.

The paintings up for auction are:

  • Cultivate Your Goodness (4" x 6" x 1 1/4" Mixed media on canvas)

  • Grow your Kindness (4" x 6" x 1 1/4" Mixed media on canvas)

  • Allow Your Inner Wild (4" x 6" x 1 1/4" Mixed media on canvas)

Allow Your Inner Wild by Deb Chaney (4” x 6”)

Grow Your Inner Kindness by Deb Chaney (4” x 6”)

New Original Artwork "Yearning Warmth and Light"

Yearning Warmth and Light by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to announce and celebrate finishing a new abstract painting. Yearning Warmth and Light has recently become available for sale on Saatchi Art. You can currently still purchase the original painting or choose to order high-quality prints in a variety of sizes.

About This Painting

This is the second of the 3 spiritually-inspired paintings that I mentioned in last week’s post. recently created. The newly created small paintings are the result of my trying to figure out how to go about creating my new large-scale Drishti Painting Series. These small practice pieces have helped me work out how to integrate sacred geometry marks using textures and layers.

Whereas the first painting last week, Turn the Lights On, was a canvas full of vivid pinks, Yearning Warmth and Light is a verdurous palette of greens and blues. Viridescent layers of olive, emerald, and lime greens combine with aquamarine, light blues, and splashes of white.

Textured sacred geometry is repeated up and down and across the canvas with stencils of the Flower of Life, creating movement and depth, as though the canvas itself has been cut away.

The choice of gentle greens and blues is intended to create a sense of calm and be a nourishing, grounding influence.

This contemporary mixed-media painting is part of my Little Gems Series.

Original Artwork "The Lost Poem" Sold

The Lost Poem by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the sale of my original abstract artwork, The Lost Poem. It was recently purchased by Ms. Jackson of Gabriola Island, British Columbia, Canada. I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks and appreciation that you have chosen to add my painting to your collection.

About This Painting

This painting was inspired by the idea of old writings – texts and books and poems – being lost for long periods of time and how they are often full of ancient wisdom and insights. When we finally discover these lost writings, it is like striking cultural gold.

The abstract painting features a rich tapestry of colours, textures, and expressive brushstrokes that come together harmoniously on the canvas. The main colours are gold and blue, with many tones and hues of each. Exploring the canvas, you will discover azure, cobalt, cerulean, turquoise, and more, contrasting with amber, lemon, and other yellows.

Layers of acrylic paint have been applied to multiple layers of collage with pages from old books, textured corrugated cardboard, and gold leaf, resulting in a complex and multidimensional surface.

I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Mrs. Bev McNicoll of British Columbia, Canada for her purchase of the painting Full Moon Frog Pond #02-003. I’m so excited that you love this piece and I’m eager to see the frame you choose and where you place this unique, little deckled edge painting in your home. Thank you for becoming a collector.

About This Painting

This painting is part of a series in which I collaborated with composer Gregory Rosa to create a special edition collection of “pieces of the pond”. A few of these paintings were made available with a limited edition Full Moon Frog Pond CD. You can sample the music that accompanies the art on Gregory Rosa’s website here: http://www.gregoryrosa.com/

The painting’s colour palette consists of many hues of green – from dark to light to mossy to turquoise. The grassy greens give a sense of a verdant marsh or pond, while the large, textured blue-green circle emerging from the upper corner elicits a closeup of a frog’s eye.

Its many layers add a tactile quality to the painting, creating an engaging visual experience. The composition is rich with depth and complexity, inviting the eye to explore every corner of the canvas and see it in different ways. For example, bold straight lines of black ink alongside lighter squiggles elicit an aerial view far removed from the closeup perspective.

New Original Artwork “Let It Be Easy”

Let It Be Easy by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This is a post to celebrate the completion of my new original artwork, Let It Be Easy. The new original painting is available for purchase along with high-quality prints.

About This Painting

The painting is part of my Little Gems Series, which begin as my practice pieces. They are small studies for exploring new ideas and techniques as well as practicing old ones. They are infused with the joy, love, and passion I feel in the studio, and that energy is imbued into the painting – my gift to you!

This acrylic-on-paper painting is a harmonious blend of blues, greens, and turquoise, with sacred geometric shapes and the Flower of Life stenciled across layers of the artwork. It exudes emotion with a sense of healing and truth reinforced by its spiritual flow and energy.

The many layers create a richly textured surface that adds depth and visual interest to the piece, while expressive brushstrokes and gestural marks contribute to its overall sense of freedom and fluidity.

Original Artwork Clearing Fear Sold

Clearing Fear by Deb Chaney (36” x 48”)

This is a post to celebrate the sale of my original artwork. I would like to extend a warm thank you to the Florida-based interior design firm, LC Designs, for purchasing my mixed media abstract painting Clearing Fear. I am very excited to see where this artwork is placed and I am truly grateful for your choosing my image for your interior design installation.

About This Painting

This painting is about “living above the line”. This is a lifestyle concept for well-being in which we choose mindful compassion and loving kindness in our behaviour and being. It rejects living “below the line”, which has us acting out of reaction, with hatred, jealousy, vengeance, or anger.

Living in this place of love requires conscious awareness. And I believe we must practice this elevated way of being, using all possible resources to remain there. This painting Clearing Fear is vibrationally imbued with the intention and sense of recognizing and accepting your fears, then releasing them to wash away.

This large-scale artwork measures 36” x 48” x 1.5”. The spiritually inspired painting is heavily textured and consists of the colours of white, gold, light blue, and eggshell.

New Original Artwork: Becoming I of II

Becoming i of ii by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the completion of my new original abstract painting titled Becoming I of II

About This Painting

Throughout the creative process, while painting this abstract artwork, I contemplated my journey of becoming an artist. I reflected on how it all began and remembered the sense of flow and fun that I experienced each step of the way.

Years ago, when I was living in California, I took part in the Santa Barbara Arts and Crafts Show along the waterfront. One of the very first paintings I completed was called Nouveau Monde, and I actually sold it quite quickly after I painted it. It really made me feel like I was truly becoming the artist I wanted to be.

Prints of the Nouveau Monde are available for purchase online here:

The pink-gold colours in Becoming I of II are reminiscent of that earlier painting, as are the simplicity of composition and thin horizontal lines dragging lazily across the canvas. It resembles an aerial view of the ocean and the beach. Its calm, subtle energy has a delicateness to it, which is something we feel when we are beginning a new experience or chapter in our lives.

This mixed-media-on-paper painting measures 9” x 12” and is part of my Little Gems Series paintings.

New Original Artwork: The Matrix

The Matrix by Deb Chaney (16” x 16”)

This post is to celebrate the completion of a new original artwork called The Matrix. Both the original artwork and prints are available for purchase.

About This Painting

This painting was inspired by the opening credits of the movie The Matrix, in which bright, neon green computer code rains down the screen. Letters and numbers continue to fall from the “computer sky”, and this effect inspired the alphanumeric-like marks on this painting.

Blue is the dominant colour in this painting – with hues like sky blue, azure, cerulean, cyan, and indigo – where it is the colour of both the sky and the sea. The painting is integrated with layers of bright gray and iridescent, lustrous silver, with hints of purples like indigo amethyst.

The square painting has a vertical composition, and words are written sideways in black with gestures and cursive text that flows up the canvas. The overall geometric patterns are reminiscent of Egyptian hieroglyphs in contrast to the more modern cursive text.

New Original Artwork: Love Letter to Myself

Love Letter to Myself by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate a new original artwork called Love Letter to Myself becoming available for purchase. Its prints are also now available to order online.

About This Painting

This painting was inspired by the cultivation of self-love. I started by typing a love letter to myself and printing it out on very large paper. I then collaged and integrated the printed text with handwritten and painted words in multiple layers of the painting. It was created for and during an online workshop I conducted during the pandemic called “Mastering Mixed Media Abstract Painting”. More details on the process of creating this painting can be found in my previous blog post.

This painting has 2 main colours — ultramarine violet and yellow iron oxide. With hues such as lavender and periwinkle, light purple is the dominant colour. Spiritually, purple is associated with the crown shakra, which is the energy centre of the top of the body. The colour is associated with a sense of belonging and connection, and the knowledge that we are all divine.

Light yellow supports the purples with shades of amber and gold, while text, both typed and handwritten, is embedded within layers of the painting.

New Original Artwork: Ho'Oponopono - Blue

Ho'Oponopono - Blue by Deb Chaney (30” X 40”)

This post is to celebrate and announce a recently completed new abstract painting.

About This Painting

This painting was inspired by the story and power of Ho'oponopono, the Hawaiian shamanic prayer of reconciliation and forgiveness.

In 2019, I was introduced to the book Zero Limits: The Secret Hawaiian System for Wealth, Health, Peace, and More by Joe Vitale and Ihaleakala Hew Len. The book recounts the extraordinary true story of Hew Len’s healing work at a prison for the criminally insane, and how he transformed and healed the prisoners through using this prayer.

I was approached by a heart-centered craniosacral healer in Vancouver, BC who asked me to paint a deeply textured painting inspired by this prayer and its Hawaiian origins. I created 3 paintings for her to choose from, and the prayer – I'm sorry, please forgive me, I love you, thank you – is creatively integrated into them in a variety of ways. Two of the paintings now remain and are available to add to your own art collection: Ho'Oponopono - Blue and Ho'Oponopono - Sepia.

There is a second Ho'oponopono - Sepia original painting that follows the same inspiration, and it is also available for your collection.

This painting creates a soothing and healing feeling with its blue and gold horizontal lines, and the integrated black, grey, and cerulean text in both cursive and block letters. The focal point is a bold white and gold 'uki'uki (Hawaiian lily) symbolic of the Hawaiian shamanic healing tradition.
