What Do You Need To Feel Good?

You Know You've Got it if it Makes You Feel Good by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

It is with great appreciation I share that my original abstract painting was sold earlier in the year. The one-of-a-kind painting is titled You Know You've Got it if it Makes You Feel Good.

I would like to send a heartfelt thank-you to Ms. Lasquite of Talisay City, Philippines for your incredible enthusiasm and passion for my artwork.

I am so grateful to not only have worked together at Elephant Stock, but to now have you as one of my collectors. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

About this painting

Vibrant colours dance across the canvas, bursting with energy in a symphony of blue and green hues. The large, bold strokes of colour pulsate with life as they lead your eye around the artwork.

The title of this playful and energetic painting was inspired by the lyrics of the song Piece of my Heart, which was a huge hit for Janis Joplin. You can hear her version of the song and follow along with the lyrics in the YouTube video below.

The original painting measures 9” x 12” and is acrylic on paper.

Can You See What's 'Happy' in This Abstract Painting?

Happy by Deb Chaney (24” x 24”)

I’m happy to share that my original abstract painting Happy was sold. I’m truly honoured and thrilled that it is now part of someone’s art collection.

About this painting

This painting was originally created when my 15 year old daughter, Ruthie– who was enthusiastically re-decorating her room at the time–used the colour palette in this painting as her theme.

She had initially asked to borrow a painting of mine that I had in inventory. But after looking through my paintings, nothing quite fit the bill for the colour and size specifications that she desired. Therefore, I did what I do.

I painted.

And I created this painting to match the theme of her room decor at the time. She of course grew up, as children do, and changed the colour palette and design of her room. As a result, the painting ended up back in my inventory. And due to that, it was recently purchased by a collector here on Gabriola Island, British Columbia, Canada.

The original square painting measures 24” x 24” and is a mixed media artwork composed of gold leaf, sand, acrylics, and collaged book pages and cut-out letters.

The colour palette is largely white, with gold and greyish turquoise. Recurring patterns create a flow throughout the painting as swooping gestural brushstrokes move your eye around the canvas.

How Many 7s Can You Find In This Painting?

God Keeps Opening Doors For Me by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

I'm so happy to share the news that my contemporary abstract painting was sold to a private collector. I am truly honoured that you have chosen to add my original artwork to your collection.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to Free Spirit Gallery on Gabriola Island for facilitating the sale of my original painting, God Keeps Opening Doors For Me.

About this painting

This original piece of abstract artwork was painted in 2016. The acrylic on paper uses collage and pen and measures 9” x 12”.

The colour palette of soft pastels blends seamlessly with earthy tones, creating a harmonious balance. Hints of gold leaf shimmer like celestial rays, symbolizing hope and enlightenment, help make this a thought-provoking and uplifting piece of artwork.

The central motif—a partially open door—is a powerful symbol of opportunity, transition, and revelation. The door stands slightly ajar, suggesting that there are infinite possibilities waiting beyond.

Which City Do You See in This Painting?

Looking For A Place To Land by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

I'm thrilled to share that my original abstract painting Looking For A Place To Land was sold and added to somebody’s art collection.

I would first like to congratulate Sensei Anthony Evangelista and your beautiful wife on your recent marriage. And thank you for becoming collectors of this original Deb Chaney artwork. I am honoured in your choosing this painting and am truly grateful for your support.

About this painting

This painting was inspired by flying in an airplane over a city and looking down at all the tiny cars and roads below. You are descending through the clouds, heading toward this place you either call home or are just visiting.

This contemporary artwork’s colour palette consists of shades of turquoise, rusty and yellowish earth tones, and black paint with collaged layers of gold leaf, corrugated paper, and book pages.

Lines of varying thickness crisscross and curve around the canvas, offering a bird’s-eye view of the urban landscape below.

Can You Feel the Love and Joy in These Paintings?

Love by Deb chaney (9’ x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the sale of 2 of my original abstract paintings. I am absolutely honoured to be mailing these contemporary artworks to San Diego, California.

Their new owner is writer, speaker, and creativity workshop facilitator Jill Badonsky. Her book, The Nine Modern Day Muses (and a Bodyguard), is a wonderfully useful guide for creatives.

Jill was my first mentor in the creative process and is the creator of the Kaizen-Muse creativity coaching program with Dr. Robert Maurer. I am beyond thrilled and excited that my paintings will be added to to art collection.

Joy by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

About these paintings

Both of these abstract paintings are acrylic on canvas. As you can tell by their titles, they share a common emotional tone and theme.

Love is the more colourful of the 2 paintings, with striking squares of deep yellow and bold lines of bright red. Purple and white round out the colour palette with a flower and “love” playfully handwritten on the painting.

Joy has a lighter, more carefree colour palette of white, light yellow-orange, and peach layered over bits of dark red. The canvas is mostly white, with strokes through the paint creating an X's and O's board. A string of O’s loops along the bottom, while a larger one breaks the rules and sits upon the line between 2 empty squares. The word “JOY” is is stenciled in black in the bottom corner of the painting.

These paintings are part of my Litte Gems Series, pieces I create during my painting practice, when I’m teaching art lessons, and for my own fun and creative exploration.

Can You Find a Dog Hidden in One of These Paintings?

Covid Creations ii of iii by Deb Chaney (8” x 10”)

I am thrilled to share that 3 of my abstract paintings have been sold – Covid Creations i, ii, and iii.

Therefore, I would like to extend a warm thank-you to Dave and Tonya in North Vancouver for collecting my original artwork and being such wonderful supporters of my career. I am so appreciative of your kindness this past summer.

About these paintings

These “little gem” paintings were created during the pandemic at Braid Street Studios in New Westminster.

The abstract artworks are a celebration of mixed media as gels, pastels, acrylics, and spray paint all interplay to create these unique and creativity-inspired landscapes that were my sanctuary during the quarantine period in 2020.

One thing that sets these apart from many of my Little Gems is that these paintings are on canvas rather than paper. Each of these paintings measures 8" x 10" x 1".

My Thanks to the Collector of These 2 Paintings

Crossing Over i of ii by Deb Chaney (23” x 30”)

This post is to announce that 2 of my abstract paintings have been sold. I would like to extend a warm thank-you to Ms. Knowler of Burnaby, BC, Canada. I am deeply grateful for your becoming a collector of my original artwork and thank you for this.

About These Paintings

The complementary paintings are primarily composed of multiple layers of whites and greys.  On top of these are dark, rusty reds in thick, gestural strokes creating a sense of aggressive motion. Layers of faint black handwriting can be seen in the background.

The heavily layered and textured paintings both measure 23” x 30”.

These paintings are part of my Fragments of Life Series. I began the series in 2013 and continue to work on it and evolve it to this day.  Each painting is an echo of my own personal evolution and life journey.

Crossing Over iI of ii by Deb Chaney (23” x 30”)

About My Fragments of Life Series

I begin with a blank white sheet of roughly textured 23” x 30”  300-pound water colour paper, a palette knife, and some heavy body acrylic paint mixed with gel medium. And, most importantly, the compelling need to create.

When I begin I often don’t know what the painting is about. As the process evolves, I learn about the painting and myself. Each painting can be a culmination of up to 20-30 layers added and taken away, taking anywhere from a week to several months for a painting to reach completion.

During this time I am in a relationship with the art piece and I learn its meaning and significance, understanding what the painting has to teach me and show me. There is often contradiction and tension – fuel for the creative fire.

The blending and glazing of colours, the scratching and removing of paint to reveal under colours, the embedding of collage ephemera, the use of pencil and conte markings and scribblings all expressions of feelings of the beauty and the pain, the freedom and the frustration, the evolution and feelings of being stuck all encompassed in this journey of life.

These are the fragments of my life.

Original Artwork “(Up & Down) The Ladder Of Life” Sold

(Up & Down) The Ladder Of Life by Deb Chaney

This post is to celebrate the sale of my original artwork, (Up & Down) The Ladder Of Life. First and foremost, I would like to thank the art collector for choosing to add this abstract painting to their private collection. You are deeply appreciated and I am so grateful for your patronage.

Secondly, I would like to thank Free Spirit Gallery here on Gabriola Island for facilitating the sale of this artwork.

About This Painting

This painting is a mixed media abstract painting on paper using acrylics, ink, and elements of collage with printed text and paper. With a dynamic and vibrant composition full of motion and energy, the many layers and textures add depth and complexity to the piece.

The colour palette consists of bold hues such as deep blues and dark greens. These contrast with warm yellows, fiery oranges, and bright swaths of white. The colors blend and interact with each other, forming an organic and harmonious composition that invites exploration and contemplation.

Bold brushstrokes reveal a sense of spontaneity and intuition. Swirling lines, drips, and gestural movements add to the painting’s sense of movement and energy.

This little painting is part of my Little Gems Series, which I use for testing new techniques and practicing old ones. While the original has been sold, prints in a variety of sizes and canvases are available through Saatchi Art online.

Original Artwork "The Lost Poem" Sold

The Lost Poem by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the sale of my original abstract artwork, The Lost Poem. It was recently purchased by Ms. Jackson of Gabriola Island, British Columbia, Canada. I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks and appreciation that you have chosen to add my painting to your collection.

About This Painting

This painting was inspired by the idea of old writings – texts and books and poems – being lost for long periods of time and how they are often full of ancient wisdom and insights. When we finally discover these lost writings, it is like striking cultural gold.

The abstract painting features a rich tapestry of colours, textures, and expressive brushstrokes that come together harmoniously on the canvas. The main colours are gold and blue, with many tones and hues of each. Exploring the canvas, you will discover azure, cobalt, cerulean, turquoise, and more, contrasting with amber, lemon, and other yellows.

Layers of acrylic paint have been applied to multiple layers of collage with pages from old books, textured corrugated cardboard, and gold leaf, resulting in a complex and multidimensional surface.

Original Artwork “Full Moon Frog Pond” Sold

Full Moon Frog Pond by Deb Chaney (8” x 10”)

This post is to celebrate the sale of original artwork from my Full Moon Frog Pond series of paintings. I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to Mrs. Bev McNicoll of British Columbia, Canada for her purchase of the painting Full Moon Frog Pond #02-003. I’m so excited that you love this piece and I’m eager to see the frame you choose and where you place this unique, little deckled edge painting in your home. Thank you for becoming a collector.

About This Painting

This painting is part of a series in which I collaborated with composer Gregory Rosa to create a special edition collection of “pieces of the pond”. A few of these paintings were made available with a limited edition Full Moon Frog Pond CD. You can sample the music that accompanies the art on Gregory Rosa’s website here: http://www.gregoryrosa.com/

The painting’s colour palette consists of many hues of green – from dark to light to mossy to turquoise. The grassy greens give a sense of a verdant marsh or pond, while the large, textured blue-green circle emerging from the upper corner elicits a closeup of a frog’s eye.

Its many layers add a tactile quality to the painting, creating an engaging visual experience. The composition is rich with depth and complexity, inviting the eye to explore every corner of the canvas and see it in different ways. For example, bold straight lines of black ink alongside lighter squiggles elicit an aerial view far removed from the closeup perspective.

Original Artwork Clearing Fear Sold

Clearing Fear by Deb Chaney (36” x 48”)

This is a post to celebrate the sale of my original artwork. I would like to extend a warm thank you to the Florida-based interior design firm, LC Designs, for purchasing my mixed media abstract painting Clearing Fear. I am very excited to see where this artwork is placed and I am truly grateful for your choosing my image for your interior design installation.

About This Painting

This painting is about “living above the line”. This is a lifestyle concept for well-being in which we choose mindful compassion and loving kindness in our behaviour and being. It rejects living “below the line”, which has us acting out of reaction, with hatred, jealousy, vengeance, or anger.

Living in this place of love requires conscious awareness. And I believe we must practice this elevated way of being, using all possible resources to remain there. This painting Clearing Fear is vibrationally imbued with the intention and sense of recognizing and accepting your fears, then releasing them to wash away.

This large-scale artwork measures 36” x 48” x 1.5”. The spiritually inspired painting is heavily textured and consists of the colours of white, gold, light blue, and eggshell.

Original Painting "The Delight of Words and Paint i of iii" Sold

The Delight of Words and Paint i of iii By Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the recent sale of my original abstract painting, The Delight of Words and Paint i of iii. I would like to extend my gratitude and a big thank you to Suzanne of British Columbia, Canada.

Thank you, Suzanne, for becoming a collector of original artwork. I am sold glad that you found (and love!) this Little Gems painting. It has truly been a delight connecting with you and establishing this connection through art.

About This Painting

As you can tell by the title, this is part of a series of 3 paintings. They were created while I was teaching a 3-day mixed media abstract painting workshop at the Pacific Northwest Art School on Whidbey Island in Washington State.

I was sharing with the class techniques for layering, incorporating elements of collage while giving attention to the use of space and applying marks with mindful repetition. I am always grateful for this class at this beautiful location which I hold so dear to my heart.

The painting uses space to create a tranquil and ethereal sense of airy openness. Darker forest greens contrast with lighter, mossy greens and white. Small repetitive squares, concentric circles, and gesture marks create motion on top of typeset words collaged below.

As mentioned above, this abstract painting is included in my Little Gems Series, which are small paintings that I create to try new techniques and practice old ones. And, of course, for fun.

Commissioned Artwork: Michelle’s Drishti Painting

Michelle’s Drishti Painting by Deb Chaney (48” x 36”)

This post is to celebrate a commissioned painting I recently completed in 2021. I’d also like to share that I offer commissioned artwork and that the commission in-take form is available online here: https://www.debchaney.com/commissions

About This Painting

This abstract artwork was inspired by healing affirmations, with carefully chosen colours, and a grounding texture of local sand. Each element was specifically selected with the support of the patron who commissioned this Drishti Painting

The overall inspiration behind all of my Drishti Paintings is to create a healing piece of artwork to enrich the owner’s meditation practice. Therefore, the meaning and significance of this painting are personal to its owner.

This Dristhi Painting is a heavily layered and textured landscape abstract painting. It integrates small and large Flower Of Life symbols from sacred geometry, which represent the positive effects of connection on our personal well-being. The painting is calming yet bold, with shades of turquoise, gold, and deep red-orange colours.

As a commissioned painting, the original has been sold, but prints are available here:

Original Painting “The Flower Cup ii” Sold

The Flower Cup ii by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the sale of my original abstract painting The Flower Cup ii. It was bought by a collector at the art exhibit I did with Sara Graeme last summer at the Free Spirit Gallery on Gabriola Island.

About This Painting

The inspiration for this painting came during the summer when I saw a woman enjoying her coffee in an eye-catching cup, sitting outside the Vancouver Art Gallery. The beautiful demitasse was covered in flowers, and this scene of the woman, her cup, and the flower beds near the gallery in full bloom, inspired my small series of Flower Cup paintings.

This exuberant abstract acrylic painting boasts vivid purples, violets, magentas, and yellows. The bright colours, swirling brush strokes, and white space create a joyful, uplifting mood.

This painting is part of my Little Gems Series, a prolific series of small paintings that are created for fun, with joy, and for creative practice.

Original Painting “The Gold is Deep Within” Sold

The Gold is Deep Within by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the sale of my original abstract artwork The Gold is Deep Within. It was the first painting purchased during my collaborative art exhibit with Sara Graeme last summer at the Free Spirit Gallery here on Gabriola Island. The collector is someone who has been a wonderful supporter of both me and my career.

About This Painting

The inspiration behind this mixed-media abstract painting came about during a workshop I conducted. I was showing the group layering techniques using collage. I used pages ripped from old books for the ground and for the sky, I applied staining and watercolour effects using acrylics.

The painting is a simple abstract landscape with a calming effect that grounds the viewer with blue for the sky and gold for the earth.

This painting is part of my Little Gems Series, a prolific series of small paintings that I create for fun, joy, and creative practice.

Original Painting “Come on Over” Sold

Come on Over by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the sale of this original mixed-media abstract painting, Come on Over. It was purchased during the Gabriola Thanksgiving Studio Tour that I was part of last November. I didn’t get a chance to meet them, but I’d like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the art collector who purchased the painting.

About This Painting

This painting was inspired by a beautiful tissue paper collage I received as a gift from someone, which had black lines similar to those down the centre of the painting. The transparent attribute of the black tissue paper allowed me to add it to the artwork while revealing the images on the layers beneath it. I really enjoyed working with this transparency and what it allowed me to do in this collage piece, which also includes text.

There is a lot of playfulness in this painting, which was done for a workshop to demonstrate collaging and integrating paint into a piece of artwork.

The colour is a yellow ochre, also known as an earthy yellow or Naples yellow, so the painting definitely has earthy tones. These are combined with blacks, whites, and greys, and a very playful, gestural feeling is created using spheres, circles, and lines. There are also torn dictionary pages embedded into layers throughout different parts of the painting.

This painting is part of my Little Gems Series, a prolific series of small paintings that are created for fun, with joy, and for creative practice.

Original Painting “New Year’s Eve” Sold

New Year’s Eve by Deb Chaney (9” x 12”)

This post is to celebrate the sale of my original abstract painting called New Year’s Eve. Like Seraphina iii, the painting mentioned last week, this was sold during the Gabriola Thanksgiving Studio Tour in November. I didn’t get a chance to meet the collector but would like to thank them for their support. And I think it’s great that we’re posting about this painting so soon after New Year’s Eve!

About This Painting

This painting was inspired by playing around and experimenting with different media and exploring what we can do by integrating them with words and numbers in different ways. The painting was created in front of an art workshop, so it was also inspired by joy and exuberance – as evidenced by adding FUN in all caps.

The colours I’m playing with in this abstract painting are iridescent gold, white, and black. As this is a mixed-media artwork, I’m also using a sand texture medium as well as an encaustic formula that I was teaching my students. The encaustic creates a very waxy and iridescent translucent layer. In the lower-left corner, you can see small circles over the word FUN. They’re textured indentations that look like real wax, even though they’re not.

For some of the text, I used India ink as well as vinyl lettering. And on another layer, I also applied micaceous gold, so in the bottom-right and upper-left corners you can see a mica gold texture. And finally, in the centre of the painting, there is a lot of sand.

This painting is part of my Little Gems Series, a prolific series of small paintings that are created for fun, with joy, and for creative practice.

Original Painting “Seraphina iii” Sold

Seraphina iii (9 x 12) by Deb Chaney

About This Painting

This post is to announce the sale of my original painting Seraphina iii. Unfortunately, I don’t know who the collector who purchased it is, but I am thankful for and appreciative of their support. This abstract painting was the first of my paintings sold during the Gabriola Thanksgiving Studio Tour this past November.

Seraphina iii was inspired by a collaborative painting lesson with my friend Seraphina. She had visited my studio and I asked her to choose 2 colours. We then both played around with her 2 colour choices and created 3 paintings each. What’s particularly touching about these paintings is that Seraphina passed away in October of 2022, just before the studio tour, and this was the first painting that sold. I’m not sure whether the collector knew that I’d painted this series with Seraphina, so it’s particularly special to me.

This original mixed-media abstract painting has light turquoise with burnt umbers and burnt sienna, giving it an earthy, watery appearance. The flow of the painting, creating a sense of earth and sky, indicates that it’s inspired by an abstract landscape. The painting also has dried coffee grounds collaged into the piece for texture. We used several techniques in this painting, including etching, alcohol removal, and adding various layers of acrylics.

This painting is part of my Little Gems Series, a prolific series of small paintings that are created for fun, with joy, and for creative practice.

Original Painting "The Moon at Night" Sold

The Moon at Night by Deb Chaney

About This Painting

This post is celebrating the sale my original painting The Moon at Night. Thank you to its new owner and art collector who purchased this art piece my Open Studio Tour in 2022. Whenever a painting sells I feel supported and excited to continue painting. I am so grateful for your support, Thank you!

The Moon at Night was inspired by a friend’s story. He shared with me that no matter where he is, he loves to look up at the moon and feel a sense of connection and healing from her. I loved hearing about this kindred lunar connection and really felt it while creating this piece.

This original mixed media abstract painting has a beautiful contrasts of darks and light colours with peachy pinks and soft lemon yellows placed against dark blue-black. There is an ethereal feeling of space in this painting. And, if you look closely you will see an old fashioned clock in the background created with texture and integrated within the painted layers.

This painting is part of my Little Gems Series, a prolific series of small paintings that are created for fun, with joy, and for creative practice.

Original Painting “Rocky Mountain” Sold and Shipped to Seattle

Painting "Rocky Mountain" by Deb Chaney

Rocky Mountain by Deb Chaney (11” x 15”)

My original painting, Rocky Mountain, recently sold in April, and I would like to extend a deeply appreciative thank you to K. Robertson in Seattle for buying this original “little gem” mixed media work. It truly is a unique piece in my collection and I hope it is a welcome and treasured addition to yours.

The Power of Buying (and Selling) Art

When a patron buys original artwork, it has a profound impact on my career as an artist that goes far beyond the monetary. First and foremost, knowing that my art is connecting with someone, fuels my creativity and fosters inspiration. So your support means the world to me.

I remember the day I became an art collector. It was a Wednesday in December of 2007, and the painting was an Untitled piece by Houston-based artist Michelle Y. Williams. I was thrilled. So thrilled that I wrote about it here while reflecting on why people buy art.

I listed off a number of reasons for why I bought the painting, including everything from the satisfaction of supporting an artist achieve their dreams to the obvious aesthetic reason of adding beauty to my home. Just as (or more) importantly, it cultivated a deeper feeling of connection to both the artist and the gallery.

And what I wrote 15 years ago, still stands today. I would LOVE to hear from art collectors about why you chose a certain piece of artwork or what buying art means to you.

About This Artwork

Rocky Mountain is an essential part of my Little Gems Series, which is a collection of small, one-of-a-kind mixed media abstract paintings. I’ve been doing the series for years, using it as an avenue for technique exploration and a means of testing my creativity. Beginning as demos or projects in one of my workshops, a chosen few emerge to become real paintings!

At 11” x 15”, Rocky Mountain is a couple of inches longer and wider than most works in the series, which are typically 9” x 12”. The painting is a mixed media collage on paper.

Similar Original Artwork and Prints for Sale

I usually like to suggest a similar original artwork to look at, but Rocky Mountain is such a unique piece, that search proved to be a challenge. However, you can purchase a high-quality print of the painting here at Saatchi Art.

You can choose to have the print on paper or canvas and even have it sent to you already framed. And one of the great things about prints is that you have a choice of sizes–meaning you can get Rocky Mountain all the way up to 30” x 40”.
