Original Painting “Rocky Mountain” Sold and Shipped to Seattle

Painting "Rocky Mountain" by Deb Chaney

Rocky Mountain by Deb Chaney (11” x 15”)

My original painting, Rocky Mountain, recently sold in April, and I would like to extend a deeply appreciative thank you to K. Robertson in Seattle for buying this original “little gem” mixed media work. It truly is a unique piece in my collection and I hope it is a welcome and treasured addition to yours.

The Power of Buying (and Selling) Art

When a patron buys original artwork, it has a profound impact on my career as an artist that goes far beyond the monetary. First and foremost, knowing that my art is connecting with someone, fuels my creativity and fosters inspiration. So your support means the world to me.

I remember the day I became an art collector. It was a Wednesday in December of 2007, and the painting was an Untitled piece by Houston-based artist Michelle Y. Williams. I was thrilled. So thrilled that I wrote about it here while reflecting on why people buy art.

I listed off a number of reasons for why I bought the painting, including everything from the satisfaction of supporting an artist achieve their dreams to the obvious aesthetic reason of adding beauty to my home. Just as (or more) importantly, it cultivated a deeper feeling of connection to both the artist and the gallery.

And what I wrote 15 years ago, still stands today. I would LOVE to hear from art collectors about why you chose a certain piece of artwork or what buying art means to you.

About This Artwork

Rocky Mountain is an essential part of my Little Gems Series, which is a collection of small, one-of-a-kind mixed media abstract paintings. I’ve been doing the series for years, using it as an avenue for technique exploration and a means of testing my creativity. Beginning as demos or projects in one of my workshops, a chosen few emerge to become real paintings!

At 11” x 15”, Rocky Mountain is a couple of inches longer and wider than most works in the series, which are typically 9” x 12”. The painting is a mixed media collage on paper.

Similar Original Artwork and Prints for Sale

I usually like to suggest a similar original artwork to look at, but Rocky Mountain is such a unique piece, that search proved to be a challenge. However, you can purchase a high-quality print of the painting here at Saatchi Art.

You can choose to have the print on paper or canvas and even have it sent to you already framed. And one of the great things about prints is that you have a choice of sizes–meaning you can get Rocky Mountain all the way up to 30” x 40”.

You can look at more paintings in the Little Gems Series on Saatchi Art. There are many original paintings available for purchase to add to your art collection. They’ve even got a “View in My Room” tool that lets you see how each piece of artwork will fit into your home.

The four original paintings for this installation were inspired by the ephemeral beauty of walking along the river through Lynn Valley in North Vancouver ‘Take it Away I, II, III & IV’ and were gifted to developers to be featured in their head office. That said, for the photo shoot and process of putting together the final documentation of the project I painted several more paintings to show the layers and process behind the mixed media works. Several of these paintings are available for your collection and can be purchased via Saatchi Online Gallery. You can click the Saatchi gallery link here or contact the artist directly info@debchaney.com to acquire one of these beautiful original mixed media paintings for your collection.

A Prelude of What's to Come...

‘ A Prelude of What’s to Come’ 9” x 12” Mixed Media on Loose Canvas.

This painting, part of my Little Gems Series , is indicative of what is going on in the studio these days...

That is, I am playing around and figuring out a new larger format series which involved repeating patters such as sacred geometry that are created with interwoven layers of paint colour, polymer mediums and textured mediums.

This painting is a study helping me figure out what I am doing and getting me ready to take it to big size paintings!

New Painting BIWT i ! This Original Modern Layered Textured Abstract Painting is all about the Transformative Power of Creativity!

BIWT i 36 W x 24 H x 0.5 D in mixed media, collage, spray paint on Canvas (c) Deb Chaney 2021

As we continue the experience of the world wide pandemic unexpectedly into its second year the majority of us are in the situation of nowhere to go, not much to do. For artists, this is ideal for creative production and I found myself handling the inability to make travel plans as my ability to go inward and to make art, more art and even more art.

One of my teachers would say that going into her studio and making art was her way of running away from home without really leaving. I love this!

Making art means that I get to dive into unknown world of layers of spray paint, collage, paint gestures, layers of translucent mediums and nobody can stop me! I get to create!

This painting called BIWT stands for ‘ Because I Want To’ and created in series at the time when the quarantine was the most intense.

It is really and truly stands for the power of creative process and how it can be the healthiest and most beautiful way to handle stress, challenges and tragedy.

Angry, frustrated, or fed up with the current situation? Then why no make art about it ? That is how I choose to move forward. My art statement for this painting is the transformative quality of being in creative process and how we can turn challenging emotions into beautiful creations.

This painting is available for your collection and you can purchase it here online at Saatchi Art Gallery.

Interview & Feature with Canadian Abstract Artists

Thank you kindly to Canadian Abstract Artists for the awesome interview (great questions!) and feature. I am deeply appreciative of being able to share my learning. on this journey as a professional artist with yourselves and your audience. Thank you.!

How would you describe your artistic style?

Spiritually Inspired Contemporary Modern Textured Layered Abstract Mixed Media Paintings

What’s the main inspiration for your art?

My inner spiritual journey.

What is the biggest goal you try to achieve with your art?

To feel good.

What’s your favourite thing about being an abstract artist?

With the creation of every painting it has its own challenges – figuring out the balance, the integration of the layers, getting to its state of completion. This process inspires me, teaches me, and has kept my attention for the past 20+ years!

Why abstract art and not other mediums? Have you always created abstract art or did you start out creating other styles?

I’ve always been an abstract mixed media artist since I started painting. It continues to excite me, challenge me, and the process enthrals me … I just don’t want to do anything else at the moment!

If you could describe your art in three words, what would they be?

layered – textured – spiritual

What’s one thing people might not know about you and/or your art journey so far?

I still often go through an experience of a wavering in confidence in myself where I struggle, doubt and fear arise during the process of a painting when its mid-way through. To move through and complete, I use many of my personal growth tools such as my fav anchoring song, pre-recorded self-kindness and inner-child affirmations, and tips from ‘the war of art’ (steven pressfield) – mainly just showing up even if I am scared or “don’t feel like it”.

Did you always know you’d be an artist or how has your art journey progressed?

No, I didn’t always know I’d be an artist… Growing up, because of what I was told, I believed that it was impossible to be a professional artist. I put all my creative thoughts and endeavours aside and got a B.Sc. in Earth and Ocean Sciences… Near the end of my degree I read a SARK book ‘Wild Succulent Women’ and knew that if she could do it – be an artist – so could I. I wrote to her and received a hand-written letter in response. I feel it was an omen of support. My journey had begun. That was about 25 years ago…

In your opinion, what’s the most important personal characteristic needed to embark on a career as an artist?

Belief in yourself and the possibility that you can succeed at what you dream to do.

What advice would you give up and coming abstract artists?

To start, you must believe in yourself and the possibility of your own success – in whatever terms you define it. (write it down, clearly). Then, listen ONLY to the kind, positive, and affirmative voices within your head and to those around you ONLY who support you and your dreams.

Do you have any favourite podcasts or books that you love and that have contributed to your journey as an artist?

I love Tim Ferries, Oprah, Brenee Brown, Abraham Hicks, Eckart Tolle, Joe Dispenza, Tony Robbins, Danielle Laporte, Martha Beck, Christine Northrup.

What’s your most fulfilling and enjoyable experience as an artist so far?

This moment now, writing the answers to this wonderful interview… Knowing there are paintings in process in the studio that I get to work on. Looking out my kitchen window and seeing the forest. Hearing the rain fall on the roof and tree leaves. Feeling inspired, supported and connected. I am deeply grateful to be an artist for my work.

Where do you see yourself and your art in 5 years?

I see myself in my newly build high-ceiling studio with great lighting, water, and heat, creating large scale (48″ x 72″ x 1.5″) mixed media abstract Drishti Paintings (TM) which embody the frequency and vibration of well-being. I see these painting contributing wellness world wide, in particular mental well-being, and doing so in both exhibited spaces such as museums, galleries and biennials. I see these paintings selling to appreciative spiritually-minded and conscious art collectors all over the world.

What do you love most about abstract art?

That you feel good looking at it, that you can always find something new, that in focussing upon it you lose yourself and forget anything that may be troubling you and how abstract art brings you into a journey that you can narrate and make-up as you wish.

Do you have any favourite quotes?

“Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.” – Andy Warhol
